(3) Knowing how to find the information you need

There are many different tools for finding information, and you need to use the right one for the right job, and you need to know how best to use it.

For books and journals use:

• library catalogues
  • Monash University Library Catalogue
  • not held at Monash: Search other libraries catalogues

For journal articles:

• electronic databases and CD-ROMs
• printed indexes

For the Internet:

• search engines e.g. AltaVista, Google
• Internet subject Gateways/ Virtual Libraries
