Subject Headings

Subject headings (or descriptors) provide a concise description of the content of the article or book. When viewing records, look for subject headings relating to your topic that you may not have considered already.

By using them in a new search you are likely to obtain a greater number of relevant records. These terms are selected from a controlled list of set terms, which may be consulted in print format or online. The Monash Library catalogue uses Library of Congress Subject Headings. This list uses American spelling (eg. behavior, estrogen, etc.) and may use expressions unfamiliar to Australian English speakers.

Using subject headings makes searching easier, because once you know the terms used for your topic you will be able to use them to find other relevant material.
