American Institute of Physics (AIP) style examples

The following are examples of how to give a complete reference using the American Institute of Physics referencing style for the main sources of information. AIP is a numbered style with references numbered in the order of appearance in the article and listed in that order at the end of the article.

Books

Elements of the citation

Initials, Author(s), Title of book (in italics if typing, or underlined if writing);- capitalise each word of the title, Edition (except the first), Publisher, Place of publication, Year of Publication (in brackets)

Example:
S. Inoue and K. R. Spring, Video Microscopy: The Fundamentals, 2nd ed. (Plenum, New York, 1997).

with page numbers if required

J. K. H. Horber, Atomic Force Microscopy in Cell Biology (Academic,San Diego, 2002), pp. 1-31.

Sections / Chapters of books

Elements of the citation

Initials, Author(s), in: Title of the book (in italics if typing, or underlined if writing); - capitalise each word of the title, edited by Editor(s) (if available), Edition (except the first), Publisher, Place of publication, date (in brackets), pp. First and Last pages.

Example:
J. M. Gonzalez-Leal, P. Krecmer, J. Prokop, and S. R. Elliott, in Photo-Induced Metastability in Amorphous Semiconductors, edited by A. V. Kolobov (Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, 2003), pp. 338-340.

Papers from conferences

Initials, Author(s), in: Title of the conference (in italics if typing, or underlined if writing); - capitalise each word of the title, Publisher, Place of publication, first and last pages of the article. eg:

Example:
E. Gartenbug and A. S. Roberts, Proceedings of SPIE, Thermosense XIII (SPIE, Bellingham, WA, 1991), pp. 1467-1459.

Journal articles

Elements of the citation

Initials, Author(s), Abbreviated title of journal, (as listed here, pdf, 795kb), volume (in bold), issue or part (if needed), First page of the article Year of publication (in brackets). eg:

B. Richardson, J. Appl. Phys. 20, 2221 (1998).
Gale Young and R.E. Funderlich J. Appl. Phys. 44, 5151 (1973).

Websites
