These links will take you to extensive lists of internet resources compiled by various authoritative individuals and organizations. There will inevitably be overlap, but each has a slightly different orientation and covers different aspects of Sociology on the net.

  • Intute: Social Sciences is an excellent subject directory providing access to subject specialist evaluated web resources for education and research. Select Sociology from the home page. Resources are organized in categories that reflect current research interests in British sociology. Select 'Full subject browse structure' for links by topic.
  • WWW Virtual Library: Sociology is probably the major starting point for internet research in Sociology. It covers in some depth: Institutions - Departments, Associations and organizations, Directories of resources, Discussions: Newsgroups, Listservs, Chats, IRCs, Research centres, Databases and archives, Courses and curricula resources, Electronic journals and newsletters, Theories, Software resources, miscellaneous and related fields. It is clearly and simply organised and updated regularly with most links working most of the time.
  • WWW Virtual Library: International Affairs Resources is an excellent site which contains over 1400 annotated links in a range of international affairs topics with high-quality information and analysis online. Areas covered include human rights, peace and conflict resolution, international development, the global environment, world religions, cross cultural and global issues.
  • Intute: Social Sciences - Sociology is another major gateway for Sociology, this site is significant in that each link has been evaluated and indexed by academics and librarians and the user can be assured of the authority and quality of the sites it links to. Each site is given a brief description highlighting it's significance or usefulness.
  • SocioSite a project from the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. This site is one of the major gateways to sociological information. The fact that it comes from a European source is also significant in an American dominated internet. It links to European sites not well covered by other gateways. The site is designed to provide access to information and resources which are relevant for sociologists. It contains high quality resources and texts.
  • The SocioWeb: A Guide to Sociology and Sociological Research an independent guide maintained by an individual. It is not as extensive as some other gateways, but provides links to major resources by type of resource rather than by specific subject. It is another useful approach to use in conjunction with other sites offering more topical access. A useful feature is the ability to sign up to be notified by email of new features and developments. The Book search is linked to Amazon books only, whereas some sites link to a variety of publishers.
  • Yahoo! Directory > Social Science > Sociology is organised by broad subject and type of resource. Each link has a brief description. Not as comprehensive as some sites but a good starting point for web resources in Sociology and it is kept up to date.
  • INFOMINE: Scholarly Internet Resource Collections with annotated and indexed links. It provides access to important university level research and educational tools on the internet. You can search the site and it has a useful table of contents and what's new listing that isn't available on many other sociology sites.
  • Sociological Tour through Cyberspace provides internet resources in the areas of death and dying, time, mass media, race and ethnicity, and family. The tour was designed for undergraduate classes at Trinity University, San Antonia, Texas and is a useful resource in these areas.
  • Sociologia.de is an initiative of Prof. Dr. Jorge Alberto S. Machado (Brazil) in collaboration with volunteers from Brazil, Spain and Germany, hence providing links to websites not covered by other gateways.
  • Australian Policy Online, news and research from Australian Research centers and Institutes, edited by the Institute for Social research Swinburne University of Technology.
