Search for sound recordings

Music students may use the listening room in the Music and Multimedia Collection area to listen to sound recordings. Sound recordings are not for loan outside the library. Request sound recordings and headphones and present your ID card at the Music and Multimedia Collection service point. If a recording is required for a seminar for a limited period, you must arrange with your lecturer to provide a written authorisation, then present this at the Music and Multimedia Collection service point.

In the library catalogue use the 'limit' function to confine your search to a particular material type ie sound recording. To do this select the 'Choose limits' button at the bottom of the search screen BEFORE you commence your search. These limits will apply to searches until you select the 'Clear Limits' button. (View libary catalogue help instructions for limiting searches). If unable to find the item required check the card catalogues situated in the Music and Multimedia Collection reading area. Recordings are searchable by composer in this card catalogue.

There are two distinct collections of sound recordings:

  1. Western Art Music: search the library catalogue first. If unable to locate an item, search the card index situated in the Music and Multimedia Collection reading area.
  2. Ethnomusicology and Popular Music: search the library catalogue first. If unable to locate an item consult the SearchMAGIC database located on the pc in the Music and Multimedia Collection reading area. Searches can be made by location / country, ethnic group, performer, composer, instrument, subject, recording title and the name of the track. Detailed instructions on how to use SearchMAGIC.

Retrieval

Sound recordings are available in a number of formats in both collections. These are indicated in the catalogues by the following prefixes:

Format Prefix
Compact disc CD
Vinyl record AS, AM or ZS
EM, ES, or EZ
Cassette tape CO

A prefix is then followed by a number, eg CD235, together they form the call number for the recording. To listen to a recording, note down the call number and request the item at the Music and Multimedia Collection service point.
