Search for music scores
Here are some strategies for finding what you need:
- Use 'Basic search' if you are unsure of appropriate search terms. For example,
- you need music for the combination of flute and piano. Key in the words: flute piano music and select the 'Search' button.
- you need to find a particular work eg preludes for piano by Claude Debussy. Key in the words: debussy preludes piano and select the 'Search' button.
- Use 'Advanced search' if you know the exact details of the composer, title or subject heading. For example,
- you are looking for works by Peter Sculthorpe. Select 'Author' and key in sculthorpe peter and select the 'Search' button.
- you are looking for works for string quartet. Select 'Browse subject headings', key in string quartet and select the 'Search' button. Browse the results and follow the links to view lists of works.
- Use the 'limit' function to confine your search to a particular location and / or material type. To do this select the 'Choose limits' button at the bottom of the search screen BEFORE you commence your search. These limits will apply to searches until you select the 'Clear Limits' button. (View libary catalogue help instructions for limiting searches). For example,
- To limit by location eg Matheson Library; in the 'Location' list select 'Matheson Library'.
- To limit by material type eg music score; in the 'Type' list select 'Printed music'.
- Use truncation (or wildcards) to broaden a search to include terms with variant endings. The library catalogue uses a question mark (?) as a truncation symbol. For example,
- sonat? retrieves: sonata, sonatas, sonaten, sonatina, sonatinas
