Connecting laptops to the Wired (Ethernet) network
FAQ

Where do I get the PCMCIA cards from?
Any computer shop should have some. When purchasing one, you may specify ones which don't have a dongle (but still have an appropriate connection point for the blue ethernet cable).

Where do I get a cable?
Any computer shop should have one. You will need to ask for an ethernet patch lead.

Where can I connect my laptop to the internet?
In the Matheson Library, 1st floor over the front steps in the West Reading room.

Where can I get help?
Ask for help from any ITS Service Desk. At Clayton it is in the Matheson Library Annexe, see Clayton campus map.

What is a dongle?
A dongle is the device that connects the PCMCIA card to the Ethernet patch lead.

What is an IP address?
It is a unique set of numbers given to all computers on the internet. An example of an IP address at Monash is: 172.17.100.44

Why can't I get to links outside of Monash?
If links outside Monash are not available, you need to ensure your proxy settings are correctly configured. Instructions for setting proxies are on the ITS web site. If this doesn't work, you may need to check that the registration of your network card address worked. To do this, students should go back to the registration page and enter the card address again. Staff, contact your faculty or division IT support.

You may also wish to complete the ip configuration again. If you are using Windows 95 / 98 or Me, select Release All and then Renew All to see if this corrects the problem.

If you are using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, go to the command (DOS) prompt, and type: ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew to see if this corrects the problem. If you have further problems, contact your nearest ITS Service Desk.

Can I print from the laptop?
We currently don't have a printer in the laptop area to which you can print. Instead save your files to removable media and print from library computers, or elsewhere. If you have installed and setup Novell software, you can print to any print station in the University, see Student printing. However, this will print to a printer in another building and you will need to collect your print job there.

Can I download PDF files to my laptop?
Yes, you can download what ever you like to your laptop. To save a PDF file click the floppy disk icon on the Acrobat Reader toolbar.

Can I run email?
Yes, information about student email at Monash University is on the ITS web site.
