Connecting your laptop to the university network using the Wired (Ethernet) connections
- Matheson Library, West Reading Room
Non Matheson Library Wired (Ethernet) network access
instructions are here
- Your laptop will need:
an Ethernet patch lead, and a PCMCIA card and dongle (Ethernet socket). These are available
at most computer shops. Your laptop may already have a PCMCIA card built in, so check
your hardware configuration first. You may find that you can purchase a network card
without a dongle, in which case the Ethernet cable will plug straight into your laptop.
See information below to check to see if you already have a card built in.
- You need to register your card address (you only have to do this once)
For Windows 95, 98, Me:
- go to Start
- select Run
- type in: winipcfg
- click OK
For Windows NT, XP, 2000 users:
- go to Start
- select Run
- type cmd (or select MS-DOS from the Programs menu)
- click OK
- then type: ipconfig /all
You will see a screen which will display your Adaptor Address and IP address. Check
for the following information:
| |
Intel Ethernet Adapter |
| Ethernet/Adapter address |

Write down your Ethernet / Adapter Address - numbers and letters only,
with no hyphens.
- Now go to a computer connected to the internet
- complete the registration procedure at a library or in the labs.
- go to the registration page,
you will need your Authcate password.
- enter your Adapter Address as your Ethernet address, and your email address under
contact information. You will have to wait for an hour before you can connect to the
network.
- To connect to the network:
you must install the Virtual Private
Network (VPN) client software to use the wired network in the Matheson West Reading
room. You need your Authcate password to get into this page. Once you have installed the
VPN client software, you will be able to browse internet sites outside of Monash using
