"I think you need to
provide more new textbooks or newer editions of previous textbooks as
some of the information in them is no longer relevant to our course."
"The library
collection is a fantastic resource and I have been pleased to find many
items for my research that I did not expect the library to have."
"I’d like a greater
range of online journal access - but the collection is very good."
"Increase electronic
resources and net library e books collection."
"The textbook
collection is really inadequate. When the exams approach, some important
textbooks have to be fought for among us students."
"The collection in my
field is on the whole really comprehensive."
"I'd love more online
journal subscriptions (both more journals available online and more back
issues of the ones already available) but realise that they are
incredibly expensive … "
"A greater range of
books in the area of Psychology"

- We are
increasing spending on print and electronic resources
Since 2002 the
university has given high priority to improving the library collection
of both print and electronic resources by increasing the budget by 28%
over 3 years. This has enabled the library to vastly expand the range
of books across all faculties and libraries. Almost 60,000 new
volumes were added to the collection in 2004.
- We are
providing more ebooks for titles in high demand
To improve
availability of textbooks whenever possible the library is purchasing
ebooks for titles in high demand. Reading lists provided by academic
staff are checked and ebooks ordered if they are available, as well as
multiple copies of the print edition. We also regularly identify
frequently borrowed books and purchase electronic versions if they are
available. Publishers are now producing many reference books
electronically and Monash is licensing access to many of these.
- We are
purchasing current and earlier ejournals
Over the past 3
years the library has purchased a wide range of journal back-runs in
electronic format, so that researchers can easily find and use this
material regardless of where in the wider Monash they are located.
Spending on electronic resources in 2004 exceeded $6million. Monash
has acquired all the major publisher ejournal archives that are
currently available, and will continue to put a high priority on
acquiring ejournals.
- We will analyse
the user survey results
Using the survey
results we can compare satisfaction with the collection by which
library you use most, by which faculty you belong to and by whether
you are an undergraduate or postgraduate student or staff member.
Over the next few months we will do a detailed analysis of survey
responses to identify areas of the collection which need targeted
purchasing to meet your needs.
- We welcome your
suggestions
We have many ways
to find out about new books, journals and other resources relevant to
Monash. However, with so many new works being published we may not
always have what you need. We encourage you to recommend titles for
the collection using the form at
lib.monash.edu.au/forms/purchase-suggestion/ .
"The adequacy
of the library collection in meeting user needs continues to be rated
the most important aspect of library service. Increased investment in
the collection since the 2003 survey has made a positive impact on
user satisfaction, and Monash continues to perform well compared with
other universities who have done the same survey. Our aim is to
provide a wide range of scholarly journals and books to support
research, while also having multiple copies of textbooks for students,
and we are increasingly providing electronic resources to make this
possible."
