Library Customer Satisfaction Survey 2003

8. Library 'Voyager' catalogue provides clear and useful information

What you said: What the library will do about it:

Performance: 5.27 / 7
Gap: 1.25

"The online voyager catalogue could be a little more 'user friendly'."

"I have by now worked out the catalogue - but some aspects of its arrangement are a bit odd & many friends I know have told me they prefer the system La Trobe & Melbourne use. For example, why on earth is the simplest search called 'advanced'? And why can you only search for a journal title under advanced, not basic? This is bound to be a bit disorienting for new students who are most likely going to start with 'basic'."

"Good Library, massive collection of books and journals, helpful staff and a not too bad catalogue system (once you work it out...)"

"I think the Vovager catalogue is great...I use it everyday."

"It is very useful to be able to borrow from all Monash libraries and the online voyager catalogue makes research a lot more comfortable."

  • We will do a study to find out how to make it more usable
We are planning to do a Voyager usability study to assess how we can make the catalogue easier to search and identify areas where information could be presented more clearly.
  • We will add items in databases to the catalogue
We are constantly adding records to the catalogue for the journals and books included in the 444 databases the library provides. This means you do not need to know whether the journal is in print or online - searching the catalogue will tell you if we have it.
  • We are making sure the links work
In 2003 we began regular checking of URL links in catalogue records. This was in response to complaints about links not working. We are now finding that each month over 98% of all links are working properly - those that are not are corrected promptly.

"There are more than 1.5 million records in the catalogue, covering print and electronic books and journals, audiovisual formats, microforms, scores, articles on reading lists, databases and selected useful websites. With so much information it is imperative that we make sure it is easy to find what you are looking for."
