Library Customer Satisfaction Survey 2003

5. Opening hours meet my needs

What you said: What the library will do about it:

Importance: 6.32 / 7
Performance: 4.83 / 7
Gap: 1.49

"The extended opening hours in the annex are convenient and I find it a really productive environment in which to study."

"Being an undergraduate student who works three weekdays I find the weekend opening hours, and the evening closing times very restrictive."

"During exam time (Week 13 until the end of exams) I would like the library to be open 24 hours - or at least until 2am and open in the morning at 6am."

"Extended opening hours on weekends and over the mid-semester break would be very helpful. Many students have a lot of essays due immediately after the break, and it is quite difficult to get anything done when the library is shut."

"Library opening hours are good, although extended hours would be extremely useful"

"Being a part-time masters student I am only able to get to the library after hours. The library at Caulfield caters for this really well."

"I think the hours of operation are reasonable."

  • We have extended hours where needed

    So far this year:

    • Caulfield Library has adopted extended evening and weekend opening hours

    • Matheson Library increased hours prior to first semester exams, and;

    • the Law Library has extended weekend hours.

These initiatives were in response to customer needs identified in previous surveys and as a result of specific requests.

  • We will look at opening longer where feasible
The popularity of the extended hours offered has confirmed the need for a variation of hours beyond those traditionally offered. We will continue to monitor use and do what we can to amend or increase hours to meet demand.

"Opening hours are the third most important issue for library users. The perception of our users is that for the most part the library's hours are appropriate. The gap between importance and the Monash performance has narrowed since the last client survey in 2000. In other words the library is doing a better job."

Chris Cooze, Library Director, Client Services (Humanities and Social Sciences)
