1. Number of computer workstations is adequate

What you said: What the library will do about it:
Importance: 6.17 / 7
Performance: 3.30 / 7
Gap: 2.87

"There is a need for more computer terminals, there is always a huge queue at Caulfield."

"More computers in the Hargrave library"

"The lack of computers is the only fault I find in this otherwise excellent library"

"Have more computer workstations available for catalogue, word processing and internet use, on each level."

"I am not sure whether there are inadequate numbers of computer terminals or whether students use them without consideration of those waiting."

  • We are providing more computers
The library is currently analysing student computer ratios at all libraries and has recently added a further 89 computers at the Caulfield Library. A number of other libraries have been identified, for additional computers - Hargrave-Andrew Library and Pharmacy Library. These two branches will have more computers installed later in 2003-2004.
  • We are working towards a better computer/student ratio
We have set ourselves a goal of having a minimum computer to student ratio of 1:70. We will have achieved this goal by 2005, if adequate funding is provided.

"Libraries around the world are grappling with the issue of providing access to information in a variety of formats. Once, providing access to information was as simple as purchasing a book. Now, with so much information in a digital format, libraries are struggling to provide computer access in quantities that meet users needs. While we need to continue to provide access to computers we also have to work within our limits of space and funding and make sure we can still afford the resources themselves. It's a tough issue but we are addressing it."
