The first step in the library’s building program was the refurbishment of the Hargrave-Andrew Library.
The Hargrave-Andrew Library is the original and oldest branch of the Monash University Library.
Since its construction in 1962 the Hargrave-Andrew Library has served the faculties of Engineering, Science, Information Technology and more recently, the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Over the years it has been annexed, merged with other libraries and extended to accommodate change and growth. The refurbishment, completed in February 2006, signals a new chapter in the history of the library, and the creation of a superior facility for its constituent faculties.
The refurbishment of the Hargrave-Andrew Library addressed some outstanding issues, including:
- accommodating steadily increasing numbers of visitors (growing by 13.7% from 2002 to 2003);
- providing for a cultural shift in preferred study styles from individual to more collaborative study; and
- facilitating access to a collection transformed by the information revolution to include vast numbers of online and electronic resources.
