| Background
Currently Monash University Lectures online
provides a digital audio lecture recording service
in over 80 teaching spaces and makes those recordings
available to Monash University students on the
internet immediately after the conclusion of
each lecture. The system can handle large volumes
of recordings through the use of the automated
scheduling and encoding software. Recordings
start and end automatically, with the lecturer
turning on and off the radio/lapel microphone.
With the continued expansion and demand for lectures
online and the increased public profile, there
is a need to set policy to ensure that the operation
is as streamlined as possible.
Access
- The MULO service is available from centrally
funded, supported and maintained teaching spaces.
All faculty teaching spaces which require the
service will be negotiated with the library
and assessed on a case by case basis. Provision
of the service is totally dependent on staffing
levels and funding.
- Lectures are scheduled and automatically recorded
on a repeated weekly program throughout the semester.
The service does not provide ‘one off’ recordings
or changes to the recording schedule e.g. record
one week and not the other.
- A fee for service is now applied for those
theatres that do not meet the above criteria. A
fee for service for the recording of conferences
and seminars can be negotiated on an individual
basis. A service level agreement must be
signed by both parties.
- Lecturers must inform guest lecturers or other
attendees that they will be recorded and the
recording will be made available to Monash University
staff and students.
- All recordings are placed on the Monash University
Lectures Online web site and are only accessible
by Monash University staff and students using
authcate.
- Recordings are not restricted by student or
faculty. The ability to restrict access to recordings
is time consuming and requires manual intervention,
and is discouraged.
- Editing of recorded lectures is not available.
This requires manual intervention. Only in exceptional
circumstances can part of a recording be deleted
e.g. when a private conversation of some sensitivity
is accidentally recorded, and a request is made
by the lecturer for it to be removed.
- If a recording is to be deferred or discontinued,
5 days’ notice is required. Notification
should be sent to lib-mlo-l@lib.monash.edu.au.
- Access to recordings produced outside of
the Monash University Lectures Online service
is not yet available.
Archiving
Recordings of lectures will be kept for a maximum
of two years and deleted at the end of the second
year.
Copyright permissions
Copyright permissions are inclusive of the online
submission form for any subject recorded, and state
that “by submitting this form you are granting
permission for the lecture to be recorded and to
be used by the Monash University Lectures Online
Service”. |
