Standards Collection

Standards have an ancillary role for many disciplines at Monash University. Of major importance are Australian Standards which may be applicable in a vast variety of subject areas. Other standards are more subject specific, such as those produced by ETSI (European Telecommunications standards Institute); ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). The library provides access via subscription to Australian Standards; IEEE standards are available as part of the library’s subscription to the IEEE Explore database and a recent set of ASTM print standards is maintained in the Hargrave-Andrew Library. Most other print standards held are also located in the Hargrave-Andrew Library. Other individual standards that are required to support teaching and research in the University are generally acquired and added to the collection upon request. Increasingly they are available electronically and this is usually the preferred format.

Other standards of particular relevance to Hargrave-Andrew clients are those produced by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization), ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and BSI (British Standards Institution). Currently it is not practical for the library to maintain complete sets of these publications either in print or on line. However, the catalogues of these standards bodies are freely available on the internet and their standards can generally be obtained in a timely manner whether in print or electronic format.
