Title: Aristocratic women: the social, political
and cultural history of rich and powerful women.
Notes: Covering a substantial number of letters and diaries of eighteenth and early nineteenth century women who moved in important and influential circles during their lifetime, this project enables a close study of the social, political and cultural history of the landed elite. Part 1 is based on the correspondence of Jemima, Marchioness Grey and her Circle, and includes material form both her daughters and from the noted essayist Catherine Talbot. Jemima was a noted heiress in her own right and was to marry Phillippe Yorke, eldest son of the Baron Hardwicke, Lord Chancellor and a member of the council of the Regency during George II absence from the throne. Part 2 looks at a slightly later period and concentrates on the correspondence and diaries of Charlotte Georgiana, Lady Bedingfield, Anna Seward and Lady Stafford. The topics covered in these papers range from thought on the situation in Ireland to Anglo-French hostilities to gossip on the separation of the Prince of Wales and the latest fashions.
