Title: Music and Dance in Surinam: A Comprehensive Collection of
Source Literature Extracted from over 4,000 Publications / edited by Claartie
Gieben and Jan Ijzermans. Leiden
Notes: This collection contains books, relevant parts of books, periodical articles, illustrations and photographs from 1599 to 1956, from the Jaap Kunst Centre for Ethnomusicology of the University of Amsterdam. Although the music of Surinam is identified with its most popular kind, called kesco, it actually consists of the music and dance cultures of several ethnic groups who settled in Surinam. Over 4000 publications were examined, out of which emerged 6000 pages of text and 369 illustrations, derived from 481 publications. In addition to material on music and dance, the collection contains ethnographical information, descriptions of the country and peoples, accounts of journeys and expeditions, photographs, almanacs, missionaries' reports, and publications and archival material in the humanities and social sciences.
