Art under the microscope

Light was shed on some of the themes and meaning behind the artworks installed at the newly renovated Hargrave-Andrew library in a presentation to library staff by Monash University Museum of Art Curator/Collection Manager, Geraldine Barlow.

Science, technology and perception are key themes of the works on display, with the perspectives offered by microscopes, telescopes as well as the idea of looking closely into the matter of the world and out into the universe, being central to the works chosen.

Geraldine explained: “We have gathered together a collection of artworks that support and complement both the geometry and colours of the building’s architecture, as well as those representing innovation, exploration and evolution – key interests of both the university and the Hargrave-Andrew Library.”

The presentation included discussion of John Perceval' Homage to Lawrence Hargrave 1961-62, a major ceramic work, which has caused much discussion and controversy amongst students since its re-installation on the entrance wall following the building’s renovation.

“Whilst this unique artwork was commissioned by the university over 40 years ago, it is immensely exciting to see it inspiring vigorous debate amongst students today. To enter the library amidst students photographing the work on their phones and participate in ad hoc discussions about the representation of human suffering and achievement in art is exactly what we would hope to encourage. The debate arising from the installation of this artwork has added so much to our continuing consideration of on the role of art on campus,” said Geraldine.

The Perceval piece was commissioned for this library in the context of the Hargrave’s aeronautical and scientific interests and the subject focus of the library. Even the methods he used in the creation of the artwork were experimental and inventive, further supporting the prominent positioning of the piece.

The Monash University Collection currently comprises about 12 000 artworks many of which are displayed on campus
