Take a better seat! - 2000 new chairs in the library

More than 2000 new chairs have recently been installed at several branches of the Monash University Library.

Styles of chairs for student use include computer workstation chairs on wheels, discussion chairs (to go around tables), two types of lounge chairs as well as ottomans for informal areas.

Hargrave-Andrew Library received over 800 of the new chairs as part of the current refurbishment.

“We have placed as many of the chairs around the library as we can and we will put the rest out when the refurbishments finish in mid-2005,” said Facilities Manager, Ross Harrison.

The remainder of the chairs have been distributed throughout other branches, including:

• over the two floors at the Sir Louis Matheson Library,
• all new chairs on the ground floor of the Law Library,
• all new chairs at Pharmacy Library on Parkville campus,
• new lounge chairs in Peninsula Library,
• new chairs on level three at Caulfield; and
• replacement of some older chairs at Gippsland Library.

The upgrade of chairs throughout the library, totaling more than $506,000 was part of the implementation of the library’s Facilities Master Plan explained Mr Harrison.

“The new chairs have been selected by an interior design company for their ergonomic and aesthetic qualities, with the obvious benefits being greater comfort for users and a generally better-looking library.”

Mr Harrison explained that buying the chairs in bulk had led to significant cost savings.

“Having a master plan that covers things like furniture and signage selection for all the branches makes things like this more efficient in both cost and time.”
