Guidelines Keywords and key phrases
if the suggested keywords are incomplete or incorrect add, amend or delete according these guidelines:
  • Do not use more than 10 keywords or more than 3 key phrases for one piece of content. Search engines will not index and display more than this.
  • Separate each keyword or phrase with a comma and a space.
  • Enter keywords in lower case. If proper names are required use mixed case. Some search engines may be case sensitive.
  • Choose keywords that are most important, unambiguous, clear and distinctive. If you are the author of this piece of content use these words in the title, description and in the body of the text as well.
  • Choose key phrases as well as single keywords. Increasingly searchers are keying in phrases rather than single keywords.
  • Choose keywords/phrases that your target audience is using.
  • Choose keywords/phrases that are appropriate for public and intranet pages. Public pages may require a geographic context while intranet web pages do not eg Monash University Melbourne Australia for the university home page but don't need these for an intranet page. Corporate names may be required for a public page but not for an Intranet page eg Monash University Library on a public page but not on an intranet page
  • Use specific keywords. Do not use terms that are too general.
  • Use English spelling. In some instances if the document is written for a wider audience variant spelling may be required eg catalogue, catalog etc
  • Similar keywords may be required if it is unclear what term is preferred by your target audience for searching eg ARROW, institutional repository, research repository; laptops, notebooks
  • Add split or merged words that might be searched as one or 2 words eg web site, website
  • Add singular and plural. Search engines treat these differently. If you know which term is searched more often use one not both eg library not libraries
  • Don't over repeat keywords or phrases. This may be considered spam and the site could be penalized. The page may not be indexed by search engines.
