Hargrave-Andrew Library

The Biomedical and Hargrave libraries have combined to become the Hargrave-Andrew Library.

The decision to merge the two branches was made in 1997, following the departure of a number of staff who had accepted the Monash package. The merger was driven by the need to continue to offer quality services and additional facilities despite the reduced level of staffing. When the University agreed to fund an extension to the Hargrave building, consultation and planning for a merger could begin.

Discussion with clients and staff on the implications of the merger took place during 1998. The groups involved included the Biomedical and Hargrave library committees, faculty boards, a refurbishment committee comprising faculty representatives and library staff, a restructuring working party and the NTEU. Planning of the merger continued throughout 1998 and the first half of 1999. The complete merging of the collection and services was originally planned for the 1999 mid-year break, but the extension to the Hargrave building was completed later than expected. The result is that although the collections will be merged during the break, the building of offices and other refurbishment needed to improve service areas and to enlarge office space will be completed later, probably by September.

Clients will be kept informed on the changes through the library web site, via email, and with printed flyers. Suggestions for further improvements are invited. They should be addressed to Marta Chiba, Hargrave-Andrew Librarian, email marta.chiba@lib.monash.edu.au

Why Hargrave-Andrew?

Professor Richard Roderick Andrew (1911-1994) was a foundation member of the Interim Council planning the establishment of Monash University and full time founding Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1960 until 1976. His background included medical training at Melbourne University, a position as a respected consultant gastroenterologist and Honorary Physician at the Alfred Hospital, and pioneering work on malaria control during his distinguished military service from 1939 to 1946.

As Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Andrew, an enthusiastic and energetic leader, brought together a very strong group of foundation professors, with whose advice and support he went on to build a world class medical school at Monash.

After his term of office at Monash, Professor Andrew became Director of Post Graduate Medicine at St Francis Xavier Cabrini Hospital. He continued his association with the Baker Medical Research Institute, he served on the Council of Australian National University, and was involved with the Australian-American Educational Foundation (Fullbright), administering scholarships and fellowships.

Controversial issues such as medical education, medical manpower, doctors' salaries, socialised medicine, and involvement in Vietnam were all strongly debated by Professor Andrew over the years. He also maintained his intellectual interest in medical history and research.
