    One-stop document delivery service

From second semester Monash University academic staff and post-graduate students will be able to send requests for interlibrary loans and intercampus loans electronically.

This option is being developed as part of an internal restructuring plan to streamline all the processes required for you to gain access to material not held as part of your own campus library. Wherever you are located, if you have access to the Monash network, you will be able to call up the electronic request form on the Monash World Wide Web (WWW) server (http://www.lib.monash.edu.au/docdel/), fill in the information required and then send it off to the DocDel Unit. Requests will still be accepted in paper format - using a single form whether the item is held at a Monash Library site or not - at any branch or campus library. Paper forms will be forwarded to the DocDel Unit for processing.

    Delivery choice

You will also be able to choose from a variety of delivery options, including fax to your personal fax machine, online delivery direct to your workstation, personal door-to-door delivery, Australia Post to your home address and, of course, internal mail within the University campuses. Or you may prefer to indicate a campus library as a delivery destination.

    You need register only once

To use the electronic request form you must first lodge a copyright registration form with the DocDel Unit. The form is available on the Monash WWW server for you to print off and submit to the DocDel Unit. A copy has also been inserted in this issue of Library News.

With this new structure, we hope to break down the previous barriers which have required you to conduct all document delivery activities (interlibrary loan, intercampus loan and inter-hospital loan) through your "home library" branch or campus, by providing more flexible options for submitting requests and receiving items.

Further information will be made available as soon as it comes to hand. In the meantime, Judith Greenaway, the Document Delivery Project Manager (judith.greenaway@lib.monash.edu.au or ext. 54800), may be able to answer your questions.

Questions about access to the Monash WWW server may be directed to Deidre Schutz, the Network Librarian (deidre.schutz@lib.monash. edu.au or ext. 55292).

    Awards for Library Staff

Georgina Binns, Music Librarian at Monash, was one of two librarians awarded the Walter Gerboth Award by the Music Library Association (US) at its annual national conference on 17-20 February 1995 in Atlanta, Georgia. The award is presented to music librarians in the first five years of their professional careers to support research projects in progress.

An award of $400 will help to fund Georgina's travel to the State Library of NSW, the National Library of Australia and the State Library of Tasmania.

Glenn Martin, Head Attendant, Humanities and Social Sciences Library, was one of the recipients of the Caroline Chisholm General Staff Award in 1994. Over the next two months Glenn will be using the award to visit a number of university, state and special libraries around Australia. He will be investigating aspects of customer service in the areas of photocopying facilities and management systems, security of patrons, staff and property, the application of library shelving and the staffing of theses areas.

The Library looks forward to Glenn's report, as it will no doubt contain suggestions and recommendations on how we may improve our practices and procedures in line with our aim to provide a quality service.

Humanities and Social Sciences Library Reserve requests for second semester

Thank you to all academic staff who have cooperated with us in our endeavour to ensure the smooth running of Reserve in first semester. As the end of semester approaches, the Reserve section in the Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS) Library will once again be sending out letters to academic staff in the faculties of Arts, Business and Economics regarding procedures for submitting course reading requirements for second semester.

The H&SS Library offers the following reduced loan periods for essential reading, in order to ensure equitable access to high-demand course materials: reserve (2-hour loan, for use within the library); short loan (2 days); and weekly loan.

The Reserve section aims to provide a flexible approach to service delivery. It will process: course reading lists and handbooks, provided the essential readings are appropriately annotated; any typed and handwritten list of requirements; and course-specific request forms, which are available from the Reserve office.

The deadline for submitting requests for second semester is 30 June.

If you would like more information about our service, please don't hesitate to contact either your subject librarian, or the Reserve office (ext. 52626 or ext. 52675).

    Visiting Staff : Library Privileges

Visitors and honorary and sessional staff need to obtain a Monash University identity card before they can be granted Library borrowing privileges.

The card is available on request from Personnel Client Services Branch. The Head of Department should provide a written request for the issue of a card, specifying the nature and duration of the visit. After receiving the identification card, the visiting staff member can use it to obtain Library borrowing privileges from any branch library. For further information contact Joan Mitchell, Personnel Client Services Branch on ext. 56055.
