Law-related alert services

This page provides links and instructions for subscribing to both freely available email alert services from legal publishers and firms, and alert services available from databases subscribed to by the Monash University Library (these alerts are available to Monash University staff and HDR students only). The Law Library also provides specialised alert services to Monash University staff and HDR students.

Law Institute of Victoria

  • Free membership for law students allows a number of services including email bulletins in a range of practice areas, along with the monthly Law Bytes bulletin for new lawyers and the weekly Friday Facts bulletin featuring legal profession news.

Legal publishers (Australia)

CCH

  • Upon free registration, set up a free daily email alert profile for news headlines with links to the full-text news article on the CCH web site. A number of areas of interest may be selected, including Law, Accounting, Financial Planning, Tax, etc.

ComLaw

  • Free registration for email notification of new and/or modified documents from a range of Commonwealth legislative databases.

Findlaw Newsletters and Alerts

  • Free newsletters compiling key legal developments in the areas of Criminal Law, Family Law, Intellectual Property Law, Privacy Law, Information and Technology Law, and Small Business.
  • Daily legal news

Lawlex

  • Email alerts on legislative changes are available to Monash University staff. A very specific profile can constructed, so that alerts include legislation covering topical areas of law in your area of interest and may also be limited to alerts covering specific Acts. Certain industry newsfeeds may also be subscribed to. See the detailed instructions.
  • As part of the Premium Research provided to Monash users, the Alert Summaries can also be viewed at the Lawlex site. Go to Lawlex and search by keyword for the Act you require. At the entry for the Act, look under Premium Research and click the link to Read Alert Summaries.

LexisNexis Legal Express

  • Free daily email alerts containing a selection of news stories, new cases and new legislation
  • Content can be customised - cases by subject area and jurisdiction, and legislation by jurisdiction.

WorldLII News

  • free alerts highlighting new and updated databases added to WorldLII.

Overseas

beSpacific - Law and technology news

  • Free email alerts from the editor of the well-known legal research site LLRX.com. Topics include FOI, e-gov, privacy, copyright, data protection, legal research, KM and search engine features.

Global Legal Monitor

  • Online publication from the Law Library of Congress covering legal news and developments worldwide. It draws on information from the Global Legal Information Network, official national legal publications, and reliable press sources.

Info4local.gov.uk

  • This site provides the first one-stop portal for quick and easy access to information on the web sites of U.K. central government departments, agencies and public bodies. It is run by a group of six departments, with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in the lead. More than 50 departments and agencies add data to info4local.
  • Select to receive email alerts by subject, department and document type.

Database alert services (Monash Law Faculty staff and HDR students only)

Lexis Alerts

  1. Sign on to Lexis using your personal ID and password (contact the Law Library staff if you don't have one).
  2. Create an Alert by first conducting a search and then clicking the "Save as Alert" link at the top of your results page.
  3. Choose Frequency (daily or weekly) and Delivery options. Enter your email address and click Email Options to select the Document Format (Cite, KWIC or Full). Click Set
  4. Click Save
  5. Click the Alerts tab on the navigation bar to view, edit or delete your saved searches.

Westlaw Alerts

  1. Sign on to Westlaw using your personal ID and password (contact the Law Library staff if you don't have one).
  2. Click Alert Center at the top right of the screen
  3. Next to WestClip, click Create Entry
  4. Enter a name for the search, enter the database identifiers of the databases to search and then enter your search query
  5. Click Edit next to Delivery Options to change the frequency and add your email address for notification.
  6. Each entry you create is displayed in the WestClip Directory. The directory shows the name of the entry, the database in which the query will be run, the query and the next date on which the entry will run. To run a WestClip query from the WestClip Directory, click Run. To remove an entry from the WestClip Directory, click Delete. Click the name of an entry in the directory to modify the settings; for instance, you may need to change how often the query is run.
  7. KeyCite Alert is also available for tracking case history and citations.

Social Sciences Research Network (SSRN) - including Legal Scholarship Network

  • The SSRN eLibrary consists of two parts: an Abstract Database containing abstracts on over 70,100 scholarly working papers and forthcoming papers and an Electronic Paper Collection currently containing over 46,700 downloadable full text documents in Adobe Acrobat pdf format. The eLibrary also includes the research papers of a number of Fee Based Partner Publications. Law Faculty academics and HDR students may subscribe to the SSRN email alert service. Contact the Law Library staff if interested.
