Locating Australian statistics

Australian Bureau of Statistics
Produces the most comprehensive collection of Australian statistics on all aspects of Australian life. It contains PDF copies of nearly all ABS publications since 1998, some historical time series and current Census data. All publications are freely accessible.

Pre 2000 ABS publications

Matheson Library holds print and microfiche publications for the period 1804-1984. Print versions are shelved in ABS catalogue number order. See Statistics, historical.

Note: The ABS provide a number of guides to their statistical publications on specific topics eg Directory of Tourism Statistics. These are listed in the current ABS catalogue at numbers 1114.0-1134.0.

Yearbooks

These provide a detailed and comprehensive overview of the economic and social conditions of Australia for the year covered. They have excellent statistical tables often with comparisons over a number of years. Chapters cover different aspects of society from climate and geography to health, education and the economy.

Statistical publications of government agencies

Government departments and agencies are the major suppliers of statistical publications. Some provide statistical data on their websites, check annual reports particularly.
