Rare Books Exhibition

Tourism in Australia

An exhibition of material from the Monash University Library Collection

23rd October 2003 - March 2004.

"The exhibition is a sample of what is available and helps show the range and depth of the holdings at Monash. For example there are some fascinating and rare guide books giving people tours of Melbourne and suburbs in 1870's and 1880's," said Mr Richard Overell, Rare Books librarian.

"Seeing how we Australians have promoted ourselves to others at various times in the past provides us with some intriguing insights into how tourism has evolved, not to mention the strangeness of seeing familiar places in unfamiliar times."

The books, pamphlets and caricatures of the period offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people from all levels of society. The popular enthusia sms and the major calamities such as the Great Plague are all features of the exhibition.
