This futuristic novel was written in 1917 as a contribution to the debate surrounding the Conscription referendum. Fielding argues in favour of a “Yes” vote, the “call to further effort and devotion on behalf of the Empire to which we belong.” (p. 53)

His description of Australia in 2000 is of "a Christless Land", the result of another "great referendum" where the people had voted to abolish Christianity.
