Like Louis Becke, Jack McLaren sailed and worked in the Pacific before turning to writing. He began his literary career sending paragraphs to the Bulletin from his home on Cape York and in 1919 came to Sydney where he sold his first two novels to Rowlandson.  He later moved to London where he enjoyed a long and successful career as a writer, though, once again like Becke, he was often in financial trouble.

His novels typically deal with the sexual tension between men in the tropics and the local women.
