Rare Books Exhibition

Early Medical Books

January - March 1997

The display includes over 90 items ranging in date from 1631 to 1945. Highlights include 17th and 18th century anatomical atlases, early works on women's health and contraception, and a number of early Australian medical works.

In addition to our own material, the works displayed were drawn from the AMA collection, and from Dr. Richard Travers. Dr Travers, the foremost collector of medical Australiana in Melbourne, is a graduate of Monash who is donating his collection to us in stages under the Taxation Incentive Scheme. The AMA material is displayed to publicise the fact that they have deposited their rare book collection at Monash on permanent loan.
