Paving the way : a romance of the Australian bush / by Simpson Newland ; with twenty-five illustrations by Herbert Cole. (Philadelphia, Pa. : Drexel Biddle, 1899)

Paving the way was first published in 1893 and was reprinted several times. The copy on display is the American edition. The design on the cover shows a white man befriended and saved by an Aboriginal woman. Newland lived much of his life on cattle stations in South Australia and the channel country of New South Wales and Queensland and his works contain details of Aboriginal habits and beliefs. His later novel, Blood tracks of the bush (1900) deals critically with the massacres of Aborigines by settlers.
