In a treat for students of the Middle Ages and of European history, Monash historian Constant Mews has re-evaluated more than 100 love letters which he attributes as being written by Heloise and Abelard at the time of their affair.
Long neglected by scholars, these letters present a view much different to the one offered buy the brilliant but controversial teacher Abelard (1079-1142), whose castration led to his
entry into religious life. Mews provides an in-depth analysis of the debate concerning the authenticity of the letters and looks at the way in which the relationship between Heloise and Abelard has been perceived over the centuries. Mews' new insights into Heloise show her to be a gifted writer with a profound understanding of love.
