Book description
This first annotated anthology of early 17th-century Character books presents over a hundred examples from eleven collections. Immensely popular, the Character -- a witty sketch of the conduct and traits of social or ethical types -- had substantial influence on subsequent literature, particularly the drama, the novel, and the essay. Even so, the Character has not been widely available to modern readers.
