Book description
The Catalan culture of Castilian expression analyzes the
Literature, the theater and the cinema in Castilian created by Catalan
within a Catalan sociocultural context. The studies take several
positions with respect to the question from if the cultural products in
Castilian of Catalan can consider part of the Catalan culture or no, from
the accepted nationalistic equation - the language defines the identity of
Literature until a pluralista recognition of which it constitutes the
culture. The articles cover an ample thematic range: from the
posfranquistas cultural debates in Catalonia to specific studies on authors,
cananonical dramatists and film directors as as much emergent, as Juan Marse,
Eduardo Mendoza, Manuel Vazquez Montalban, Roas Regas, Jose Antonio Garriga
Candle, Joan Barber, Jordi Sanchez, Juan Jose Bigas Moon and Manuel Balaguer.
Confronting the studies of the catalanidad of the Catalans that use the
Castilian from different points of view, this collection demonstrates that
this one is not an only way to understand the catalanidad but that it are
expressed of innumerable ways, in an ample fan that goes from the rejection
to its total incorporation.
About the editor
Originally from Sydney, I lived in India and Canberra, but grew up
in Melbourne. My interest in Spanish language and culture dates from 1988
when I started learning the language privately before travelling throughout
Spain in 1989-90. I became interested in Catalan culture through friends
and, as part of my B.A. at La Trobe University, I studied history, Spanish
and Catalan language and literature. Thanks to several grants from the
Australian and Catalan governments, I was able to study in Barcelona, where
I lived on and off for several years whilst completing my PhD. I returned to
Australia in 1999 and since then have taught Spanish language, cultural and
literary studies at La Trobe and Monash Universities.
