Book description
Ferinand Bailliere came to Melbourne in 1860 and opened a
bookshop. The shop concentrated on medical and scientific books because F.F.
Bailliere came from a family which had made a name for selling books of this
kind. The original firm in Paris had opened a successful business in
London. Ferdinand Bailliere carried this expertise with him to
Melbourne. He quickly moved into publishing and many of the scientific
books published in Victoria bore his imprint. He then moved into work
for the Victorian government with Post Office Directories and Gazetters.
In this area he further expanded into the other states. Much of the
detailed work in compiling these reference works was done by the writer
Robert Whitworth. There is a dramatic and traumatic involvement by
Bailliere with Dr. Beaney a controversial figure in Melbourne medical
circles. Bailliere died tragically in one of Victoria's early train
accidents. The book contains a listing of Bailliere's publications and
copies of the various title pages.
