About the Authors

Associate Professor Ian Copland teaches British Imperial, World War II and modern Asia history at Monash University.  He is the Director of Monash University's Centre of South Asian Studies.  He has authored several books including The Burden Of Empire: Perspectives On Imperialism and Colonialism (1990) and The Princes Of India In the End-Game Of Empire, 1917-1947 (1997).

Professor John Rickard is the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at Monash University.  He is a
 Fellow of the Australian Humanities Academy.  Professor Rickard has authored several books including
Australia, a cultural history (1988) and Class and politics : New South Wales, Victoria and the early Commonwealth, 1890-1910 (1975)
