Kiyomoto-bushi : narrative music of the Kabuki theatre
Alison McQueen Tokita Published by Baerenreiter (1999) |
Book description
Kiyomoto-bushi is a branch of Japanese narrative music accompanied by the
three-string lute (shamisen) that dates from the early nineteenth century.
Unlike some narrative music, kiyomoto has been influenced by lyrical music,
especially from kabuki theatre, where it has a place as dance music.
This work is first detailed study of kiyomoto music in English. It is a
valuable resource on this genre of Japanese traditional music and a major
contribution to the field.
