The author has sought to trace the history of the Institute and outline major
changes which have taken place in Australian perceptions of the outside world
over the 65 years of its existence. During that time acceptance of Britain’s
imperial leadership has given way and been replaced with ideas of engagement
with Asia within the framework of the American alliance.
About the Author
John Legge is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Historical Studies at Monash University. His field of expertise is the history of modern Indonesia. He has written many works including a biography Sukarno : a political biography.
